Once again Subaru’s cheeky little Impreza WRX elbows its way to a spot on our 10Best list, prevailing in a field salted with a number of much fancier pedigrees. What’s up with that? It would be hard to argue irresistible good looks, or the richness of the Subie’s interior appointments. Aside from a set of terrific bucket seats up front, this is just another compact.

But impressions of mediocrity vanish when the driver lights the fires. With 227 horsepower on tap from its 2.0-liter turbocharged flat-four, the WRX can sprint turn for turn with such cars as the BMW 330i, and its full-time all-wheel-drive system — standard on all Subarus — makes the most of available traction on all surfaces, from grippy to gravel. Suspension tuning strikes a comfortable balance between rally ready and family friendly, the steering is quick and accurate, and the engagements of the five-speed manual transmission encourage vigorous rowing.

Fun to drive is composed of power and agility in more or less equal measures. The WRX delivers both, and does so at a bargain price. Does this sound like an ordinary compact? No, it doesn’t. And it’s not.
